Gemma at The Bowery Hotel
A Flavorful Escape in the East Village
Strolling into Gemma feels like stepping into a romantic Italian reverie inside the Bowery Hotel. Soft candlelight, exposed brick, and cozy banquettes set the stage for what quickly becomes a memorable culinary journey. We sat outside on the patio which is perfect for people watching in the heart of NYC.
Starters:
We began with a vibrant green salad, burrata and juicy tomatoes.. Sweet cream added the perfect finish with the sweet corn, and the wrap of eggplant and cheese. It was a tasty trio that teased the palate and paved the way for what came next.
Second Course:
The short rib ragù paired finely with spinach-ricotta dumplings, accented by a hint of sage and twist of brown sugar. The richness and subtle sweetness complemented each other perfectly—rustic yet refined, a dynamic duo that warmed both stomach and spirit.
Sides:
Our meal was accompanied by generous portions of fried potatoes and artichokes—crispy, golden, and addictive. They provided the ideal crunchy counterpoint to the softer mains.
Dessert:
Saving the sweetest for last—a Nutella calzone with berries—was pure luxury. It indulgent and sweet and it struck the perfect balance of nostalgia and culinary flair. A calzone that’s both dessert and delight.
Gemma is more than a restaurant—it’s an experience. Its setting, nestled in The Bowery Hotel puts you in a warm/ambient feeling, while the food delivers heartfelt, comforting Italian flavors with subtle sophistication. From the first tangy salad to the last berry-stuffed calzone, each dish is thoughtfully crafted and generously plated.
Whether you’re exploring NYC or looking for a cozy date night spot, Gemma offers a charming escape, serving up both atmosphere and indulgence in equal measure.

Barlume
Nestled in the heart of the Flatiron District at 900 Broadway, Barlume is a beautiful Mediterranean-inspired restaurant that immediately draws you in with its stylish ambiance and warm hospitality. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, making the evening feel both relaxed and special.
The experience began with a sampler of dips: whipped ricotta with maple syrup, the tomato-pomegranate spread was vibrant and slightly sweet, the fava-bean hummus was rich and earthy, and the spinach tzatziki was refreshing with a pleasant tang. Every bite felt thoughtfully crafted and full of fresh flavor. We enjoyed a crisp green salad with fresh herbs and toasted hazelnuts, a perfect palate refresher before the mains.
We opted for their three-course dinner for $45, which is an exceptional value given the quality and portion sizes. For the entrée, we enjoyed artichokes in a citrus-lemon sauce, delicately balanced between tart and bright, followed by chicken kebabs served with toasted pita, a cool yogurt dressing, sweet yellow tomatoes, and green peppers. The branzino was perfectly cooked—flaky, tender, and subtly seasoned to let the freshness shine through.
We finished with a tiramisu that was everything you want from the classic—light, creamy, and just sweet enough without being overwhelming.
From start to finish, Barlume delivers not only on flavor but on atmosphere and service. We highly recommend Barlume for anyone looking for a welcoming, beautifully designed spot in Manhattan to enjoy a relaxed yet elevated dining experience.

Mr. Moto Residence: A Unique Japanese Culinary Haven in Williamsburg
Tucked away in the vibrant neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Mr. Moto Residence offers an extraordinary Japanese dining experience that feels like stepping into a warm, comforting home rich with history and cultural treasures.
The setting of Mr. Moto Residence is profoundly remarkable. The story behind this unique restaurant is as fascinating as the dishes it serves. Back in 1853, President Millard Fillmore commissioned Commodore Matthew Perry to embark on a groundbreaking year-long expedition to Japan, opening the doors between two very different worlds. Traveling alongside Commodore Perry was Mr. Moto, an art connoisseur and keen observer, who meticulously documented the journey—including the discovery of timeless Japanese home-cooked recipes that have now been lovingly resurrected in this very restaurant.
Walking into Mr. Moto Residence feels like entering a cherished Japanese home. The walls are adorned with authentic treasures and artifacts from Japan, giving diners a genuine cultural immersion. One of the most charming features is a hidden bookshelf that cleverly leads to the bathroom, adding a playful and secretive touch to the ambiance.
Among the standout offerings here is the signature ochazuke — a soul-stirring broth simmered for over 60 hours, infused with the essence of every fish prepared for the meal. This broth perfectly encapsulates the dedication to authenticity and flavor that defines Mr. Moto.
During our visit, we began with the edamame, which were perfectly pickled in vinegar and house-made spices—an elegant and refreshing start. We then indulged in the special $29 light sushi set, featuring sushi:yellowtail, tuna, and a roll of our choice: we chose salmon. Each piece was impeccably fresh and so delicious that we savored every bite with appreciation.
To complement the meal, we enjoyed a glass of plum sake — sweet and tangy, with rich plum undertones that beautifully enhanced the flavors of the meal.
Mr. Moto Residence is truly a hidden gem in Williamsburg, offering an authentic Japanese culinary journey wrapped in a warm, intimate atmosphere filled with history and charm. Whether you’re a devoted fan of Japanese cuisine or a curious newcomer, this special spot is definitely worth a visit. We highly recommend it to anyone seeking a genuine Japanese experience surrounded by cultural treasures and heartfelt hospitality.
